You’re probably bouncing off the walls with excitement about the impending arrival of your bundle of joy. We wouldn’t be astonished if you’re also nervous, though!
It’s normal, particularly for new parents, to be worried about a change this big to their family. What’s going to happen? Will everything be ready? What should you even prepare to be ready?!
Today, we’ll help you out with at least one of these so you can start to relax a little. Below is a list of the top 10 must-have baby products for new parents, ranging from must-have baby feeding products to the best cribs. We’ll help you figure out what to buy for a new baby.
Convertible Crib
Convertible cribs are amazing, no two ways about it. These modern marvels let you get a crib, toddler bed, and daybed all in one, which means you won’t have to scramble to find a new bed too quickly when your little one grows out of the old crib.
Fortunately, there are a tonne of good options for this now. Our favourites include the ones from Babyletto, DaVinci, Nursery Works, and Delta Children.
Breathable Baby Mattress
The right mattress doesn’t just keep your little one comfy enough to sleep but also keeps them safe. You want one that’s breathable, just in case your baby does decide to flip over while sleeping.
Look for Babyletto Pure Core, the Hatchling Tamago, or the Newton Baby Mattress. If you prefer organic materials, try Naturepedic’s Organic Breathable Baby Crib and Toddler Mattress.
Multi-use Bassinet
Baby gear takes up space and can be expensive, so it only makes sense to be smart about it. If you’re already going with a convertible crib, get a similar bassinet. You can actually find ones that do more than one duty, like the fantastic Graco Pack ‘n Play Close2Baby Playard.
This bassinet can serve as an infant bassinet (that’s portable, by the way), a diaper changing station, and even a full-sized playard. Hard to ask for more than all that in a single package!
Complete Baby Bottle/Baby Feeding Set
Whether you’re breastfeeding or not, you’ll very likely need containers for your little one’s milk. If you want something that mimics the mother’s nipple as closely as possible (great for transitioning breastfed babies to the bottle) try the ones from Philips Avent and Comotomo. Bonus points for them being wide-necked and easy to clean! or fails to provide information about its formulation, it’s best to stay away from it!
Nursing Pillow
Perfect for supporting your baby when they’re feeding. If you want something that does triple-duty, check out the Doomoo Buddy – it’s a nursing pillow, pregnancy pillow, and toddler pouf all in one!
Easy-to-Clean High Chair
Your baby will make good use out of this once they’re able to sit up by themselves for meals. Get one that’s as stable as possible and easy to wipe down. We like options such as the Stokke Tripp Trapp High Chair and the Hauck Alpha+.
White Noise Sound Machine
An odd entry in the list? Maybe, but you need to keep your sanity to care properly for your little one, and the way to do that is to encourage the baby to sleep as peacefully as possible. A good white noise machine helps with most babies, as it happens!
The nice thing about this is that you don’t actually need to buy a dedicated white noise machine, though. It’s possible to play white noise on a regular speaker or sound system. The trick is just finding which one works with your baby.
Travel Stroller
Many parents like travel strollers for their ease-of-use and convenience. Most have car seat adapters for car infant seats too.
If you’re getting one, be sure to check which certifications your option has. Furthermore, try to look for ones with SPF material for the canopy and smooth suspensions. We like ones like the Peg Yerego Ypsi and Hauck’s Vision X.
Baby Monitor
Obviously, you need a baby monitor so you can keep an eye on your baby at all times, even when not in the same room. In the smart baby monitor category, we liked the Nanit Pro. An easy-to-use app, nice features like a breathing band to count the baby’s breaths, and decent screen resolution won our favour.
However, not everyone wants a smart baby monitor, especially one with a subscription fee. If that’s the case, try the Infant Optics DXR-8. No loading time, snappy response, and overall reliability make it a favourite among parents.
Diaper Pail
A diaper pail will make dealing with your baby’s smelly diapers so much easier. Look for ones with carbon filters to help you control the odour, as well as one-handed operation for convenience. We recommend the Playtex Diaper Genie Complete for this.
